Rural Revival

Rural Revival
Britain’s rural communities are in a state of crisis that is threatening the livelihood and lifestyles of their most disadvantaged members. Several long term trends are converging to the extent that the delicate balance between the many interests in the countryside is reaching breaking point. In particular:
  • erosion of the quality of rural infrastructure, including transport, shops and other essential services, is increasing the social exclusion and isolation faced by traditionally disadvantaged groups.
  • constant declines in agricultural incomes mean that many of Britain’s farmers are struggling to stay in business at all.
  • the unique rural environment is under threat from traffic congestion and declines in biodiversity.
  • Rural Revival is a new action-oriented campaign which aims to break the cycle of rural decline through enterprise-based community self-help. Launched in 2003 by the internationally recognised Plunkett Foundation, the campaign has three main strands:
  • It advocates enterprise-based community self-help approaches to rural policy makers at the national, regional and local level as a proven and practical approach to sustainable rural development.
  • It demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach and accelerates its take-up by providing catalytic support packages to fledgling rural social enterprises which result in defined social benefits.
  • It improves the consistency and quality of the support infrastructure for enterprise-based community self-help by developing the capacity of local support organisations.
