Women's Institute

Women's Institute
The Womens Institute was formed in 1915 with two clear aims: to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then our aims have broadenedand we are now the largest womens organisation in the UK. We celebrated our 90th anniversary in 2005 and currently have 211,000 members in 6,800 WIs. We play a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities. Over the years we have campaigned on a wide range of issues that matter to women and their communities, including Equal Pay in 1942 and Aids in 1986. Today our campaigns range fromthe environment and dairy farmingto excess packaging. We launched the Great Milk Debateon 25 April, in partnership with the NFU. Our current key campaigns are Farmgate Milk Prices, Packaging andClimate Change.
