cod vs. coley [Added April, 02, 2008]

We took a little jaunt to The East Beach Cafe at the weekend.  Bracing walk along the beach, followed by some good grub, what could be better?

This restaurant is committed to local food and their menu is excellent, as is their fish and chips.  East Beach's menu doesn't specify fish type.  It's fish of the day.  We think this is right and proper, as after all you want the best of what's arrived fresh.  However, one thing caught our eyes - a short message saying that many people won't eat the fish and chips if they know it's coley.

But it isn't about that, is it?  It's about food snobbery, and snobbery is ignorance.

Cod is now a threatened species.  It likes to live wild and isn't much good for farming, unlike salmon.  We just have to stop eating it for a while.  That's it.  Coley, when battered and fried like cod, is a tasty alternative.   In fact, it has a lot more flavour than cod.

Coley, not just for cats!
