Live exports- [Added January, 28, 2009]

Horsemeat is largely taboo in the UK, but that doesn't mean it isn't raised here and sold abroad. A relatively unknown and definitely unsavoury side of British farming is the raising of horses for the European meat markets.  Whilst live exports were thankfully banned some years ago, it is estimated that over ten thousand animals a year are still raised and exported for meat, mostly to be processed into sausages and salamis in Southern France and Italy.  The quality of the meat is secondary and these animals are often kept in appalling conditions, such as those found on the farm of Jamie Gray in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, last year.  Whilst the RSPCA is usually aware of meat traders in their area, there is little they can do without a watertight case for prosecution.  In previous blog entries, we've noted the rise in interest in the welfare of more conventional food animals here in Britain, such as chicken and pigs.  It is high time that awareness was raised on the subject of horse farming.  Although the numbers are small, the suffering is often great.
