A good greengrocer knows his stuff and stocks excellent seasonal fruit and vegetables. Modern demand may well mean that some of his stock is imported, but this should not dominate. You should be able to see, or find out, where each item was grown and how (look for certifications or standards). Organic food is often imported from Holland or Africa, and much of it is tasteless, particularly the Continental stuff. Israel has very high organic standards, but food miles are an issue. When fruit and vegetables are coming from a long way away, they are picked unripe and sprayed with preservatives, which compromises the flavour and health benefits. Fruit and vegetables are a versatile, delicious part of a meal, not just the stuff you have to force down to meet your five a day target.
